Maintaining humidification levels
for printing and paper storage

  • Printing Press
  • Paper Storage

Constant air humidity is a key factor in attaining a high quality of print and ensuring a smooth production process.  During winter months in particular, or at times of low atmospheric humidity, the air humidity in printing plants can fall to critical levels, resulting in paper distortion, static, impaired machine running, production stoppages, and leading to additional costs.

Paper is hygroscopic, which means that it is very susceptible to changes in relative humidity. For optimum printing and paper storage conditions it is recommended the humidity should be kept between 50-60%RH.

In dry conditions, moisture is drawn from the exposed surfaces of stacks of paper and they shrink, but the centre of the paper still maintains its original moisture content. This causes "tight edges" and the paper begins to curl. As a result, the paper misfeeds and creasing can occur.

In addition, changes in humidity will cause the physical dimensions of the paper to change which can result in mis-registration of colours in multi-pass jobs. Any change in the dimensions of the paper, however small, between runs of two or more colour processes and the colours will not line up.

Aireven can offer you a humidification solution for any of the above.
