Creating stable relative humidity for
the preservation of valuable artefacts

  • Art galleries
  • Museums
  • Archives
  • Concert halls

Creating a stable surrounding environment is essential for the preservation of works of art, historical archives, and for maintaining the finest sound of musical instruments and singers’ voices. Important factors that need to be considered are temperature and air humidity, whether they be in an art gallery, museum, library or concert hall.

Museums and galleries need to control relative humidity generally between 45% and 55% throughout the year.  Fluctuations in temperature and humidity caused by external factors can cause a major problem, for example heating, sudden weather changes.  In particular, changes that occur repeatedly over a period of a few hours or days will have the most damaging effect, such as in materials warping or cracking, and may only be tiny, but which over time will become more obvious. As works of art grow older they become brittle and fragile, and less able to readjust their internal moisture level without damage.

Museums and galleries need to control the environment around exhibits 24 hours a day, seven days a week as temperature and relative humidity can fluctuate frequently and dramatically on a daily basis. This requires constant operation of the humidification system, which therefore needs to be reliable.

Any humidification system installed must be able to react quickly to a drop in humidity, shut down rapidly when the humidity level is increased and modulate from 0-100% operation to cope with the close control required.   With travelling art exhibitions it is normally a requirement of the loan galleries that these conditions are maintained for the duration of the exhibition.

Aireven has humidification systems installed in some of the most prestigious arts and culture sites in Australia, including:

  • National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
  • Australian Museum, Sydney
  • State Library, Sydney
  • Auckland Art Gallery
  • Sydney Opera House
  • Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane
  • National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne
  • Australian War Memorial, Canberra
  • National Library, Canberra

Aireven can offer you a humidification solution for any of the above.
